Yesterday, 350 singers from across Lewisham, Lambeth, Royal Greenwich and Southwark joined forces at Blackheath Halls to from the South Riverside Partnership Massed Ensemble choir. What a fantastic sound it was!
Having visited some of the rehearsals in schools, it was clear that some of the children didn’t quite understand how the piece worked because they had only been rehearsing their own part of it. But by the end of yesterday’s rehearsal, there had obviously been several aha! moments, and happy faces all round as the penny dropped and the singers finally understood their role in the piece after several weeks of rehearsals.
Under the baton of conductor, Tim Redmond, the choir had a fun filled day – involving an impromptu masterclass from beatboxer Trey Qua from Sedgehill School, a lesson in conducting from the maestro himself (I think he was given a bit of a run for his money!) and an insight into Kerry Andrew’s inspiration for the piece.
The choir are definitely looking forward to the performance. Becky Ratchford from Brooklands primary said, ‘Singing in a big choir makes me feel excited.’ Hugo Smith (also a Brooklands pupil) added, ‘I think when the audience hear the performance they will feel very proud of their children.’
Next stop for the choir full dress rehearsal on 8th November where there’ll be joined by Junior Trinity Symphony Orchestra and Animate Orchestra.
